How to use Ask the Sign
Ask the Sign lets the assistant you already use (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Muse) answer questions about the place you're in: what it has, prices and stock, where things are, hours and policies. When you ask, it can also message the staff or report a wrong answer.
1. Connect it once
- ChatGPT: open Settings, then Plugins. Find Ask the Sign, choose Connect and approve. If it isn't listed there yet, open chatgpt.com/plugins, tap +, then Add custom MCP server and Create MCP App. Enter the name Ask the Sign and the connection
https://mcp.askthesign.com/mcp, then tap Create and approve. - Claude: open Settings, then Connectors. Find Ask the Sign, choose Connect and approve.
- Gemini: open Gemini's connectors and choose Add a custom app. Paste
https://mcp.askthesign.com/mcp, choose Next, then Allow and Connect. - Muse: open Settings, then Connectors. Find Ask the Sign, choose Connect and approve. If it isn't listed there yet, ask Muse: "Create a custom connector called Ask the Sign for the MCP server at https://mcp.askthesign.com/mcp".
You can also add it by address as a custom connector: https://mcp.askthesign.com/mcp. Approving creates a random ID for your assistant. There is no sign-up, and we never ask for your name or email.
2. Tap a sign
- Tap the Ask the Sign sign with your phone, or open its link.
- Choose your assistant and press its button: Open ChatGPT, Open Claude, Open Gemini or Open Muse. A chat opens with a message that contains a one-time connect code. Send it. (Gemini opens an empty chat: copy the message shown on the sign's page and paste it in.)
- Ask about the place, for example "Where can I find something to fix a dripping faucet?", "Where is the restroom?" or "Please ask a member of staff to help me."
A code works once and expires after 15 minutes. Your connection lasts for a while after your last tap; how long depends on the place. Tap the sign again to renew it.
Try it now
Open the public demo store at tap.askthesign.com/t/askthesign-demo from any browser. It has sample hardware items, and its staff replies are simulated, so nobody is actually contacted. If you use Muse, open tap.askthesign.com/t/askthesign-demo-muse instead: the same store, with an Open Muse button.

We don't have an account for you, so there is nothing to close on our side. Your random connection ID and its check-in records follow the retention periods in the Privacy Policy. You can reconnect any time by tapping a sign again.
Delete a place's data
Business owners can do this themselves: sign in at console.askthesign.com, open your place, export a copy of its records first if you want one, then delete the place.
A deleted place goes offline at once and its signs stop working. Its records are erased from our live database, its stored files are deleted in the background, and backups are gone within 30 days. A few records, such as how the place was confirmed, stay for the periods in the Privacy Policy. Deleting can't be undone, and it doesn't close your owner account. To close your account, or if you can't sign in, email privacy@askthesign.com from the address on the account.
Customers: we don't ask who you are, so we can't look records up by person. See your choices.
Common questions
For customers
Do I need to create an account with Ask the Sign?
No. You need your own ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Muse account. We don't ask for your name, email or phone number.
What does Ask the Sign see about me?
A random ID for your assistant's connection, the place and sign you checked in at, and the short text your assistant sends when it looks something up. It never sees your photos, your voice, or the rest of your chat. See the Privacy Policy.
The assistant says I'm not checked in.
A visit lasts for the time the place sets after your last tap, and only tapping extends it. Tap the sign again to get a fresh check-in link. Each check-in link works once and expires after 15 minutes.
My assistant didn't get the check-in message.
Some phones drop the pre-filled message. Open the "Assistant opened without the message?" section on the sign page, copy the message and paste it into your chat.
The answer was wrong.
Tell your assistant "it's not there" and it can report the problem to the place, or ask it to page staff. Ask the Sign indicates uncertainty when it has it, but it can still be wrong. Confirm important details with a person.
Will it follow me after I leave?
No. Answers stop when your visit ends. The connector stays installed but does nothing until you check in somewhere.
Which assistants work?
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Muse.
For business owners
How do I get started?
Email hello@askthesign.com. Setup covers your place's details, items (spreadsheet upload or Square), a simple map of where things are, answers to common questions, and your signs.
What item data do you take?
Customer-facing fields only: names, brands, categories, prices, variants, stock and where each item is. We drop cost, supplier, margin and sales columns if they are in a file, and our Square connection is read-only for catalog, inventory and your list of Square locations.
Can I see who asked what?
You see the questions asked at your place, what happened, and which sign was tapped. The weekly email summarizes it.
How are staff alerted?
Staff alerts currently go by email to each staff address you verify with the code we send. Text messages are not enabled yet. When they are, each number will need the same verification, and the SMS terms will apply.
Who owns my data?
You do. You can export or delete it any time. You give us a license to run the service and to use de-identified, aggregate data; see the Terms.
